Logging and Lumbering Party

Mrs. Bagley's third grade class finished their unit of study on Logging and Lumbering. The class celebrated their learning with a lumberjack breakfast---complete with students dressed in traditional Lumberjack wear. The students had a hearty breakfast of biscuits and beans. Many parents were on hand to enjoy the celebration.

Intramural Basketball Starting Soon!!

Intramural basketball at OTES will begin with an organizational meeting on Wednesday, February 7 at 2:35 (right after school) in the gym. The meeting will end at approximately 3:15. Please pick up your child at this time.

All interested 4th adn 5th graders are welcome. Parents may attend the meeting if interested, however it is not necessary. The purpose of the meeting is to formulate teams, choose team names and captains, and discuss intramural basketball rules.

Our games will be played in the OTES gymnamsium. Games begin at approx. 2:40 and will end as close to 3:30 as possible. Rides need to be available at that time. There is NO supervision or transportation provided to the YMCA after games. Our intramural basketball season runs through the middle of March.

All players will recieve a schedule upon completion of team organization. Parents are asked to accept full responsibility of their children.

Who? Who?

Mrs. O'Malley and Ms. Martin's 2nd Graders were visited today by the Chewonki Foundation Owls of Maine Outreach Program. As part of the presentation, several live owls were displayed for the students to see. Students also learned to recognize different owl calls, how to find pellets in the wild, and what to do if they find a young owl in the woods. Who? Who?

:)

Waiting for the Bus

The Y bus was running late one afternoon, and our patiently waiting students were getting restless. They thought it would be fun to sit down and pretend they were sleeping. However, being dressed for winter, a bus load of students laying down ended up looking like a pile of ski pants and jackets!! Where's Waldo?

O.T. High School Assists 2nd Grade Scientists

Mr. Dave Ploch and some of his high school science students visited Mrs. O'Malley and Ms. Martin's 2nd Graders today. The 2nd graders teamed up with high school students and together they dissected owl pellets. During the lab, different bones were sorted, categorized, and assembled on a display sheet. The lab groups also utilized our laptops and a USB Microscope to view and take pictures of their specimen at 10x and 60x magnification. The high school students were amazing role models for our students, and we hope to see them in our school again sometime soon! Thank you to all who helped to make this event happen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have A LOT of Lost and Found clothing set up on tables across from the cafeteria. PLEASE remind your child to check these tables for any lost items as they will be packed up and sent to Goodwill at the end of the season.

Remember to listen to the radio or television stations on mornings with snow storms to hear any school cancellations. We’ve been really lucky so far and we hope to continue this great weather pattern!!

We are very proud of our school motto, ‘Work Hard and Be Kind”. We’ve just received new signs hanging in our lobby and near the road promoting that motto. The staff and students are all working hard to live by those words! Tee shirts can still be ordered throughout the year with this motto screen printed on them for $8.00 a piece.

Our budget process for next year has just begun and we ask for all the community support we can get during this time.

If you are a University student this semester, please let the office know your new schedule and any new phone numbers, so we may contact you in case of emergency.

There have been requests for students to stay inside for recess as they have colds.
Unfortunately, we can not accommodate the growing number of children staying inside for recess as we need to have adult coverage outside. If your child is too sick for recess, perhaps you should consider having he/she stay home for another day. If the temperature (not including wind chill) is below 10 degrees, we all have inside recess.

Special Guests!!

Kindergarten student Erin Snyder rescued four Muscovee ducklings. The ducklings recently hatched near her home due to the warm temperatures (a hatching in this area rarely occurs due to extreme winter temperatures--not this year!!). Erin brought her new friends to school so her classmates could share her excitement.

Work Hard and Be Kind

OTES recently acquired two brand-new banners that proudly display our school logo and motto. The banner shown helps to brighten our already beautiful lobby, while the other banner can be seen underneath the Stillwater Ave. road sign. The signs were created by Tony Sullivan of Graphics Sign & Design Center (Old Town).

K-Kids Get OTES a New State Flag!!

Our school has a new state flag flying high above OTES...but it's not
just any state flag. Recently, K-Kids President, Tia Jackson, wrote a
letter to Secrtetary of State Matthew Dunlap. She told him that our
current flag was old and tattered and asked if he could give us a new
state flag. Not only did Secretary Dunlap grant her request but the
new flag was flown for a day above the State Capital in Augusta before
being sent to OTES!
