Kindness Counts

Students in LC 1 were recognized for all their kind acts in the month of October. Teachers in LC1 have been filling out "Kindness Counts" slips for all their students in their classroom as the kind acts occur. Two names from each of the classrooms in LC 1 were drawn and read in an assembly held on Friday, October 20th. Students were given a certificate of achievement, a golden pencil, and a round of applause from their teachers and friends. We have many, many kind and good-hearted children at OTES. Check out the other classroom blogs to see students recognized for kind acts. www.otsd.org/teacherblogs.htm

OTES to Host Middle School Basketball Teams

Administration at LMS and OTES met this week to build the Middle School Basketball Season Schedule. The partnership is an exciting opportunity to observe our students as they grow as students and school citizens. Our school works hard to build successful learners and we value the chance to see our teachers' efforts develop as our students leave us to attend LMS. Our school continues to bring community together to serve all students in Old Town. Games and practices will begin in November. We'll be sure to publicize the game schedules in order for our OTES families to attend the games and cheer our LMS students on!

Fireman Dan Visits OTES

Dan Bean of the Old Town Fire Department came to visit each grade level at OTES during October. In grades Pre-K - 2, he taught basic fire safety skills such as "Stop, Drop, and Roll", smoke alarm safety, and the dangers of matches and lighters.

In grades 3-5, he brought in a new, interactive house. Students had the opportunity to look through each room and find fire hazards. They then corrected each room so that it was safe. During this process, students were able to observe how smoke travels in a room, learn outlet safety, and the importance of fire alarms.

Thank you fireman Dan!!

Alex Goes to Space Camp

What did you do last weekend? Alex B., a second grader at OTES, attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama! While at Space Camp, Alex learned what it's like to be an Astronaut and a Mission Controller. Some of the highlights of this amazing experience include the water tank and multi-axis chair and G-Force and other simulators. In the end, Alex and his crew (that included his father) journeyed deep into space on humanity's first trip to Mars. Congratulations Alex!! OTES is very proud of your hard work!

Flag Football Championship Game!!

The intramural flag football season at the Old Town Elementary School culminated in the championship game being played on Friday, October 6th.

The game matched the Pit Bulls and the Blue Thunderbolts and was more exciting than any championship in the history of flag football! The teams were so evenly matched that the final score, 11 to 11, resulted in co-champions of the school. This was an extremely hard-fought game, one that was enjoyed by many spectators.

The elementary flag football league is offered to all interested 4th and 5th graders and runs for six weeks. This year the league had 35 participants and was coordinated by OTES Physical Education Teacher, Mike Thurston.

OTES has a New Motto and Logo!!!

Old Town Elementary School is proud to unveil the new motto and school logo.

"Work Hard and Be Kind" was selected by the staff and students using an online survey tool.

Our new logo has handprints surrounded by a triangle. We chose a triangle because it is the strongest geometric shape; and while keeping this in mind, the strength of our school is dependent on Collaboration, Cooperation, & Communication. The colors of the hands represent the 4 learning communities (red, green, yellow, and blue). BUT WAIT, I ONLY SEE THREE HANDS?! That is because the logo will be placed on various articles of clothing that are colored to represent the 4th community......For example, a student in the yellow community may want to wear a yellow shirt that on which the logo contains the other three colors inside the triangle--red, blue, and green.
