This following is a combination of "quick fixes" and helpful hints aimed at improving the use of the MLTI laptops at Leonard Middle School. The problems in this list are the most frequently occuring....most of which can easily be solved by users. This is not an official FAQ site!!  Please do not hesitate bringing your laptop to Mr. Cyr if you are unsure of a problem.

PROBLEM:    My laptop will not log in (or......"I forgot my password").

-----Solution-----See Mr. Larson.......you must have your password re-set.

PROBLEM:  My laptop will not turn on (or....."I think it went to sleep and it won't wake up").

-----Solution(s)-----

1.  Check to see if your battery has power by pushing the battery button underneath the laptop.  If only one light is lit or one light is blinking, chances are your battery does not have sufficient power.  Plug in your charger.....if the problem persists execute a power reset and allow time for your laptop to charge.

2.  MY BATTERY IS GOOD AND I STILL CANNOT TURN IT ON!!
First, press the "caps lock" key to see if the laptop has power.  If there is power (and you have sufficient battery strength) press and hold the power button until the laptop is off, wait a few seconds, then restart. (IMPORTANT: If laptop is hot, allow time for it to cool down BEFORE restarting)

PROBLEM:  My laptop will not go to sleep when I close the lid (or "My laptop is VERY hot!!!  I even smell something burning!!).

-----Solution-----

Try forcefully shutting down the laptop.....(hold the power button until the laptop has shut down--you can check this by pressing the "caps lock" key....if the key lights up, there is power, if it does not light up, the laptop is turned off.
IMPORTANT:  If your laptop was VERY hot, shut it down (using the steps mentioned above) and allow it time to cool before restarting it.  You may even want to try a Power Reset before restarting the laptop.

PROBLEM:  My laptop seems to be frozen in an application (or...."I've got the spinning beach ball and it won't go away!!).

-----Solution(s)-----

1.  Try a Force Quit (To force quit an application, press the following keys in this order: 'option'-'apple'-'esc' keys.  Then, select the application that seems to be frozen, and close it.

2.  My Force Quit does not even work!!!!  Try forcefully shutting down the laptop.....(hold the power button until the laptop has shut down--you can check this by pressing the "caps lock" key....if the key lights up, there is power, if it does not light up, the laptop is turned off.

PROBLEM:  My laptop will not access the Internet while at school.

(First check to see if others are having the same problem.  If other students are not able to access the internet, chances are there is a problem with either our Network, or our Internet provider)

-----Solution(s)-----

1.  Check to see if you have Airport signal.  Your Airport meter is located next to your battery status in the tool bar (located at the top right hand corner of your screen).  This "pizza" looking meter has four solid black color bands that indicate your signal strength.  If you do not have any colored bands (or only one) you are not in range.  Move closer to an airport.

2.  If you have two or more bars and still cannot access the Internet, click onto the Airport meter (the pizza slice), turn the Airport off, then turn it back on again.  (Make sure that our Network "Leonard Wireless" has been selected)

PROBLEM:  My CD-ROM drive does not seem to be working and/or My ports do not work (Firewire, USB, etc.).

-----Solution-----

Shut down the laptop.  Perform a Power Reset, and restart the laptop.

PROBLEM:  I need to install a printer.

-----Solution(s)-----

How do you add a printer at school?
-Once in your print center window, click the 'Add' button.  This may take a minute or so to load....please be patient.  In the new window that opens, click on the 'Rendevouz' bar and change it to 'IP Printing'.  This will open a new window asking for IP addresses.  Install the following LMS Networked Printers into your print center (the series of numbers are the IP addresses).

How can I print at home?
-Unless you have a home network with a networked printer, you must have a USB printer.  To install a USB printer, plug the printer's USB cable into your laptop (make sure the printer has power AND is turned on).  Enter the print center  window and click the 'Add' button.  Click the 'Rendevouz' bar and change it to 'USB Printing'.  Your printer should automatically pop-up in the print center window.  If it does not, chances are you have a printer that is newer than the software in your laptop.

PROBLEM:  I am having printing "issues".

-----Solution-----

I am selecting a printer and pressing print, but nothing is happening!!
-Check to see if you have Airport Signal.
-Make sure you have not completely shut the lid of your laptop.
-Check to see if there is a printer error in the print center.

CHECK YOUR PRINT CENTER!  Sometimes students inadvertently stop a printer's status.  Look in your print center and make sure all printers are in start mode.

***IMPORTANT:  If you have tried printing several times, make sure that you delete your print history before resuming printing.  If you do not, the printer will run off EVERY copy you requested thus wasting precious paper and ink.
