Learning By Doing


Service-Learning-A method of teaching and learning that challenges students to identify, research, propose, and implement solutions to real needs in their school or community as part of their curriculum.  

Community Service-An activity that engages people in addressing needs of their schools and communities; volunteering for an existing project/event/organization that is beneficial for the community.  

Community-Based Learning
-An approach to learning that enhances the curriculum by using community members and places as resources for learning.  

Service Project-A project or event that is planned, implemented, and evaluated by students of an organization or class, but has no curriculum connection.

Our Service-Learning Grant





Old Town is in the second of a three year service-learning grant.  The funding for this grant comes from
Learn and Serve America.

Technical support for the grant is provided by the KIDS Consortium.  Old Town uses the funding to support service-learning projects, staff development, and
public relations events.
