and surrounding communities. Members
have collected money for UNICEF, prepared meals for the Ronald McDonald House,
and participated in the “Thirty-Hour Famine” with

Old
Town
High
School
, they also created and presented inspirational cards
for the troops leaving for
Iraq
earlier this year. Several members hope
to attend the National Key Club Conference in the spring. As well as taking
part in many projects throughout the community, the Key Club members plan to
educate the school community by an on-going poster awareness project targeting
issues that are important to high school students.

National
Honor Society (NHS)
The
Old
Town
chapter of the National Honor Society values the Society’s ideals of
scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These ideals are considered by the faculty as
the basis for election to the chapter.
Membership carries with it a responsibility and an obligation to
demonstrate to others the four ideals valued by NHS.
Old
Town
’s chapter members
participate in a variety of service activities.
They manage the recycling effort for the high school, sponsor a Haunted
House during Halloween, bake pies for Thanksgiving to give to Manna Food
Kitchen, and work with a local retirement home on flower beds in the fall and
spring.
Old
Town
’s
chapter of NHS works very hard to make a positive impact on both the school and
the community.

Civil Rights Team
The Civil Rights
Team’s mission is to “celebrate diversity, promote positive change, and raise
awareness of the world around us”. To
accomplish this, the Civil Rights Team is involved with a variety of activities
and initiatives. Through the Maine
Attorney General’s Office, the Civil Rights Team is part of the Maine Civil
Rights Team Project, an initiative designed to train team members in educating
the student body about the Maine Civil Rights Law. During the month of October, team members
facilitated activities and discussions around diversity issues and planned a school-wide
assembly. The Civil Rights Team has
planned a “Diversity Day”, which included the coordination of twenty-two
workshops in a day. Team members are
also involved with Operation Breaking Stereotypes. Operation Breaking Stereotypes is a student exchange
with a school in the
Bronx
, NY and the experience
is meant to show the similarities in students from very different
backgrounds. The Civil Rights Team is
very passionate about their work.
