The Guidance Office is now the Student Services Office
In the spring of 2006, Old Town High School reorganized the Guidance
Office. This office is now known as the Student Services office and is
comprised of the Academic Dean of Students, a guidance counselor, a social
worker, a registered nurse, and a secretary. This team works together
to support and guide each student.
Maine College Access Network
A new Web site (Maine CAN!) has been created for individuals and organizations who help promote postsecondary education options to Maine students. This site has been created as a way for all of us to share ideas and information and ask questions.
Maine is fortunate to have so many programs available to its students. However it is often difficult to know about all of the options available. By working together and sharing information, we hope that we can all better serve Maine students.
Go to http://mainecan.ning.com and check it out.
Fame Education Applications
Applications for Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, Educatiors for Maine Forgivable Loan Program and the Tuition Waiver Program will be available March 1 on the FAME (Finance Authority of Maine) Web site. Go to www.famemaine.com/education and choose the "Forms & Applications" link.
College.Gov
College.gov was created by the U.S. Department of Education in collaboration with students. This site is intended to be a source for information about planning, preparing and paying for postsecondary education.
There is a section for parents and family members as well as a section for teachers and counselors.
Beware of fafsa.com
In the past several weeks, many parents have called FAME and asked about the site www.fafsa.com, which charges a fee for help with FAFSA completion. In all instances, the parents entered their personal information on the site and did not realize they were using the wrong FAFSA site until they were asked to pay a fee.
Please be reminded that www.fafsa.ed.gov is the ONLY official FAFSA completion site.
College Application Process
1. Seniors are encouraged to bring in completed applications with a check
for the application fee made out to the college they are applying to
and give it to Mrs. St. Louis or their counselor (at least 2 weeks prior
to the college’s deadline!) The Student Services staff will make
a copy of the student’s transcript, report card, and recommendations
and mail the entire package.
2. Seniors are encouraged to have their applications into the Student
Services office by Thanksgiving vacation. However, the Student Services
office will accept applications at any time.
3. FAFSA forms are filled out by the students’ family and mailed
to the federal processing center or completed and submitted on line as
soon after January 1, 2009 as possible. The deadline for financial aid
information to be received at most colleges is March 1 but it is important
to know the deadline for every college.
4. Students bring in their college acceptance letters to the Student
Services office so that a copy can be made for graduation and scholarship
records.
5. Students apply for scholarships independently or by coming in to the
Student Services office and checking out the scholarship applications
that are kept on file.
