Thank you for visiting the Alton Elementary School website. Our school is a small rural school located 4 miles from Interstate 95 in Alton, Maine. The University of Maine in Orono is a short drive away on the opposite banks of the Penobscot River. The town of Alton is located in Penobscot County and was incorporated in 1844 from a portion of Argyle Plantation. In 1863 and again in 1871, it ceded land to Old Town. Alton was originally known as Township No. 3, then was set aside for Waterville (now Colby) College in 1815. Today, Alton is comprised of several local businesses, all of which show their loyal community support for our school. The local Alton Volunteer Fire Department, Alton Grocery, First Student Bus Company as well as several other agencies have all contributed to the ongoing successes, accomplishments and activities that our community offers to its students. The 2008-2009 school year was a year of learning, excelling and celebrating those achievements that students had attained. The staff at Alton School worked with other local organizations, parents and volunteers to offer a wide range of opportunities for all its students. It indeed was an exciting time to be in the field of education. The teaching staff in Alton were involved in numerous professional learning opportunities from fall to the end of the year. All the staff and administration took an active role in being part of the RtI, Response to Intervention process, Professional Learning Communities, Mentor Programs for beginning teachers, as well a s numerous Literacy and Math enhancement trainings. Alton Elementary School is one that is always looking for ways to improve what it offers to its community. We take pride in the services that a small school like Alton has to offer each individual student. Having a small enrollment and staff size allows us to work and get to know each child personally. The staff at Alton Elementary is a dedicated one.
